Building Early Digital Skills: KEHSIA Develops a Coding & Co-Doing Resources Toolkit for Educators

As part of its ongoing commitment to innovative and inclusive education, KEHSIA has developed a comprehensive Coding & Co-Doing Toolkit for Teachers, designed to introduce young children to coding and logical thinking through playful, hands-on learning experiences. It’s the result of the useful resources shared by our partner FISM Parma and our supplier Kids Life Skills asbl, a luxembourgish asbl expert in the field of coding. It is meant to summarise unplugged and digital resources, useful for the educators that want to develop coding activities.

Developed within a European-funded framework, this toolkit aims to support educators—particularly in early childhood education—in integrating coding concepts into their daily teaching practices in an accessible and engaging way, especially with the useful resources that are provided and the activity examples that are proposed.

At its core, the toolkit redefines coding as more than just screen-based activities. Instead, it approaches coding as a way of thinking: learning how to give instructions, solve problems step by step, and understand how actions lead to outcomes . This perspective makes coding both approachable and meaningful for young learners.

A key feature of the toolkit is its strong emphasis on “unplugged coding”—screen-free activities where children explore concepts such as sequencing, direction, and logic through movement, play, and interaction. These activities allow children to physically engage with learning by navigating grids, following instructions, and experimenting with trial and error in a supportive environment .

In addition to methodological guidance, the toolkit provides a wide range of ready-to-use materials and structured activities, enabling educators to gradually guide children from simple tasks to more complex challenges. These include:

  • Storytelling-based coding exercises
  • Movement-based and collaborative learning scenarios

An important component of this initiative is the integration of physical educational games and tools, these include a diverse selection of logic games, problem-solving activities, and manipulative materials designed to reinforce coding concepts through play. By combining structured guidance with tangible resources, the toolkit ensures that learning remains interactive, inclusive, and adaptable to different learning styles.

The toolkit also introduces elements of robotics and digital transition, allowing educators to progressively move from unplugged activities to simple technological tools, ensuring a smooth and age-appropriate introduction to digital learning environments.
